NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH’S REVIEW OF ACUPUNCTURE

A patient recently drew my attention to an article they had read in their newspaper. They actually brought the cutting from The Mirror with them to their next appointment. It was a short article about the benefits of acupuncture, yoga, t’ai chi, and massage.

It quoted the National Institute of Health in Washington DC and a review carried out by them of 105 clinical trials. The researchers found improvement in pain relief with these therapies and suggested that these findings could be used to guide front-line medics in the treatment of patients whose physical suffering cannot be ameliorated by medication. No significant harmful side-effects were found in any of the 105 studies.
