In the human body, the skeleton has five main functions:
-
SUPPORT FRAMEWORK: it literally stops us from flopping to the ground, supporting and anchoring the soft organs. The legs support the trunk when we stand, and the rib cage supports the thoracic wall.
-
PROTECTION: of soft organs eg brain, spinal cord, and the thoracic organs.
-
MOVEMENT: it is the interaction of muscles and bones that facilitates all bodily movements.
-
STORAGE: bones store calcium, and energy is stored as fat in the yellow bone marrow of long bones.
-
BLOOD CELL FORMATION (HAEMATOPOIESES): red bone marrow produces red & white blood cells
