FIVE ELEMENT MEDITATION

This is a form of Qi Gong that serves to protect us against any hostile energy, whether it be a physical threat, emotional, colds and viruses, or any negative influence. In ancient China, it was used by practitioners entering areas with epidemics.

The more you are able to visualise as you carry this out, the stronger it will be and the easier to access this powerful resource at short notice.

  1. Sit comfortably (facing south ideally but this is not essential), close your eyes and take your consciousness down into your lower Dan Tien. Breath into this area for nine breaths. Now we are ready to begin.

  2. Breath into the liver (right side of the abdomen, just at the bottom of the ribcage) once. As you breath out, imagine a green mist rising out of the liver to your left and filling that space as far as the horizon. Then visualise this green mist becoming a vast ancient woodland forest. Be as imaginative as you wish with the details and spend as many breaths there as you wish.

  3. Then take the focus back to the lower Dan Tien for one breath. Now we repeat this process for the five other elements.

  1. Breath into the Lungs once, and upon exhalation visualise a white mist of energy rising out of the Lungs to the right to fill this area to the horizon. This then turns into a mountain range rich in metal ores and covered in snow. Once you have this image clear in your mind and can still feel the original Wood element to your left, breath into the lower Dan Tien for one breath.

  2. Breath into the heart and as you breath out, imagine a red mist rising out of it and emerging forward to fill the space in front of you. This becomes a great wall of fire with the bright red flames reaching towards the heavens. When you are finished, again breath into the lower Dan Tien once.

  3. Now breath into your kidneys located at the rear of your body in the lower back area. A black/dark blue mist rises out of these on exhalation filling the space behind you. This then becomes a dark, mighty, deep ocean – imagine the depths of this, the swells, the currents. Then take one breath into the lower Dan Tien.

  4. Finally, breath into the digestive organs (stomach, spleen, pancreas) which are all located more-or-less in a row beneath the heart on the left and centre of the abdomen. A yellow/golden mist rises out of these as you breath out. This rises up and then comes down to enshroud you, anchoring you to the earth beneath your feet.
